How to holiday on a budget on the Costa del Sol

We love holidays, but we know that they can be expensive and difficult to afford when you’re on a budget. However, the good news is that the cost of living here on the Costa del Sol is significantly cheaper than in the UK and most parts of Europe and there are loads of great things to do which are completely free! If you look out for deals and follow a few simple tips, you can have an amazing holiday on the Costa del Sol on a budget.

Here are some of our top tips

  1. Travel as a group and book a villa

If you’re travelling with a large group, you can get an incredible deal per person per night and have a stunning villa too. While they look expensive, splitting them between three families for example makes them much more affordable than staying in a hotel. Plus, because you have the space to relax, cook and enjoy the facilities, you spend a lot less money on eating out and it is much more relaxing too.  Check out our villas with pools

  1. Eat, drink and be merry like the Spanish do

The Spanish locals are price sensitive and so cafes, bars and restaurants catering to locals are significantly cheaper than tourist places and offer a more authentic experience. They don’t tend to be the most beautiful places – expect plastic chairs and strip lighting, but the atmosphere and food tend to be great and you can still get a small beer or a coffee for 1€, or a three course meal for 10€ in some places, so follow the Spanish to the busiest places and you’ll definitely get a bargain.

  1. Pack a picnic

When you’re staying in a holiday rental you can save a fortune by stocking up at the supermarket, making up a delicious picnic, or some snacks and drinks and taking it with you. We love a picnic on the beach for lunch, or a few beers as the sun goes down and it’s cheap as chips if you take it with you. Be prepared on a day out with a reusable water bottle and snacks too so you avoid having to spend money when you’re thirsty and hot. There are water fountains everywhere so you can keep topping up and you’re minimising plastic use too!

  1. Enjoy the free activities

Over the summer there are hundreds of free activities going on along the Costa del Sol, from concerts to ferias, magic shows, talks, dance classes and activities for the kids. Ask at the tourist office, or check out one of the local area guides online, then head along and enjoy the fun totally free! For families with kids, the many playgrounds are a godsend and of course a stroll by the sea and a trip to the beach is perfect family fun. Many holiday rentals even have toys and games to take out with you, or enjoy at your apartment or villa, so you don’t need to buy things to keep them entertained.

  1. Book online and look out for money saving coupons or special days
  • If you are going to one of the summer ferias and want to take the kids on the rides look out for the “Día del Niño” every fair has one and rides are often 1€, or half price, which really saves you a lot.
  • Pick up any coupons you see around for the attractions like water parks and theme parks, but then check online before you buy, as it’s often a lot cheaper booking online ahead of time and you can also skip the queues.
  • Look for later entry tickets to waterparks, which can result in a massive discount but still give you quite enough time to enjoy the experience
  • Look out for packs of offers for different activities such as the ones from Selwo which offers a combined price for a number of different activities, but then check online to ensure that it adds up compared to buying them individually online

There are lots of other fantastic money saving tips from Money Saving Expert on their website which could save you a fortune.

We have recently dropped the price on this great one bedroom penthouse in La Cala by 20%. It is a great centrally located property, just 400 meters from the beach and a five-minute walk into town. It sleeps four people and costs from just 66€ per day, so is an excellent base for a great value holiday on the Costa del Sol. Check out more budget holiday homes on our website, or contact us for more information on great value holiday rentals.

Sporty holidays on the Costa del Sol

You are spoilt for choice if you want to play sports on the Costa del Sol, so why not incorporate it into your next holiday?

Water sports are plentiful and a great option for being active in the hot summer months. Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) is all the rage right now and you can hire boards all along the coast. There are jet skis to hire, not to mention banana boat rides and parasailing. For the more adventurous, look into sea kayak tours in places like Nerja, where you can explore the coves and enjoy the crystal clear waters with an experienced guide.

Golf is a huge draw for tourists to the Costa del Sol as we have so many fantastic courses within a small area. Wherever you decide to be based, you are never far from a course, and you can choose between a driving range, nine hole or championship courses, depending on your skill and preferences. If you are visiting in the summer this is the low season for golf, so there are some good deals available and we have teamed up with Golf Two4One to allow you access to some amazing offers. Simply email our reception and we will provide you with a card free of charge.

Tennis and Padel are also incredibly popular here and there are some excellent tennis clubs all along the Costa del Sol which are open to non-members. Padel tennis is a massive sport here and is like a mix between tennis and squash. Many of the larger developments will have their own tennis and padel courts which residents and guests can use free of charge. Please ask us when you book your holiday rental and we’ll let you know what facilities are available. There are also municipal tennis and padel facilities, which are excellent value for money. Ask in your local tourist office for one close to you and how to book the courts, as it’s not always obvious.

Cycling is a sport which is booming here and hiring a bike is a great way to explore, as well as getting you active. Start easy by heading to the seafront promenade and enjoy the flat terrain and the amazing views, or head into the hills for some serious mountain biking. Read our guide to cycling holidays on the Costa del Sol.

Last but not least, one of the nicest (and cheapest) activities is to walk and explore the area on foot. Once again the paseo is the easiest and prettiestplace to do this and you can walk for miles along this beautiful coastal path. There are also a number of excellent hiking routes in the hills and you can also take walking tours to see the sights. We love exploring Marbella on foot and there are some great routes in town, along the seafront and in the hills.

As you can see, there’s a huge range of sports to enjoy as part of your next holiday on the Costa del Sol. If sports are important to you, please let us know when you enquire about your holiday home. This allows us to advise you on the best properties with communal sports facilities, or the right place to stay for a golf holiday.

How to travel around the Costa del Sol this summer

How to travel around the Costa del Sol this summer

Are you planning your holiday to the Costa del Sol? How exciting! It’s brilliant to look forward to a week or two in the Spanish sunshine, but we know there’s lots of things to think about.

At HolidayRentalontheWeb we have been helping tourists have the best holiday for 15 years, by providing stunning holiday rental properties and offering insider advice on where to go, what to do and how to really enjoy this great destination to the full.

One of the things we are often asked is how to get around, so we wanted to focus on this for today’s post. We’ve spoken to Denise Wright, our Client Services Supervisor, and asked her to answer the most commonly asked questions about getting around the Costa del Sol to help you to plan.

How do I get from the airport to my holiday rental?

If you’re staying in the towns of Malaga, Torremolinos, Benalmadena or Fuengirola, the airport is connected by the train and there are also frequent buses.

If you are staying in Marbella, there is an excellent airport bus which takes around 45 minutes and goes to Marbella bus station. Once there, you’ll need to take a cab to your holiday rental.

Outside the main towns, public transport is limited, so you’d need to get a cab or a transfer if you don’t want to hire a car. We find that transfers are better value if you are a group of four or more, otherwise it’s quite similar pricewise.

Can I use public transport to get around?

It really depends what you want to do and where you are staying. Within the main towns there are decent bus routes and you’ll find you can walk most places. However if you’re staying outside of these areas, or on urbanisations out of town then you won’t find it practical to rely on public transport.

Should I hire a car?

Hiring a car gives you most flexibility, especially if you’re not staying in a centrally located holiday rental. It is good for people who want to explore several towns during their stay and visit the attractions. If you are visiting in peak time, make sure you book your hire car in advance, as they can be hard to find.

Are there any other ways of getting around that you’d recommend?

There are miles of wonderful seafront promenades running along the Costa del Sol. So if you’re staying by the beach, then walking or cycling can be a very good way of getting around and enjoying the view.

We’ve mentioned hiring a car, but another option is to hire mopeds. These are great fun and very easy to use if you don’t want to travel big distances. They are affordable, you can hire them with a normal car licence and parking is very easy, so they are a good option in the summer.

Taxis are available, although can be difficult to get in peak months. Uber has just recently been launched here and covers the area from Malaga to Marbella. Tourists are finding this easier to use, as they can do everything on the app and can see the prices too.

Finally, there are some private transfer companies which will take you to your holiday rental from the airport and can also do day trips and restaurant transfers too.

If you have any other questions which aren’t included here, please feel free to comment below and we’ll get them answered for you. Alternatively, you can send an email to and we’ll get right back to you.

You can read lots of useful advice on our blog, or download our free holiday guide to find out more about this great area. If you haven’t got your accommodation sorted yet, search for holiday rental properties on our website, or contact us for last minute bookings and we’ll let you know what properties we have available that match your criteria.

Tips for getting ready for your Costa del Sol holiday

Costa del Sol Holiday Tips

It’s great the see the UK experiencing some early summer weather and everyone enjoying being outside, BBQs, days at the park and hitting the beer garden. The UK in the sunshine is amazing, but as we know it can’t last, so if the recent warm sunny weather has reminded you how great it is to be in the sunshine and left you wanting more, it’s time to book and get ready for your summer holiday on the Costa del Sol.

They don’t call it the sunshine coast for nothing, with around 300 days of sunshine per year and rain almost unheard of between June and September. The temperatures have now settled into the mid to high twenties, with a night time temperature of around 16, plenty of bright sunshine and blue skies.  This is the perfect place to hit the beach, let the kids play in the pool or at the local playground, dine alfresco and feel the sun on your skin.

But before you go, we have a few tips to help you get ready –

  1. Invest in a superlight case – If you want to save money and just take hand luggage, a really light case is your best friend and is usually made in the correct dimensions to fit in the overhead compartment no problem. Travelling with hand luggage can save you time as well as money, as you can get out of the airport and start your holiday even quicker!
  2. Put together a capsule summer wardrobe – You don’t need to take tons of stuff, especially if you’re staying in a holiday rental property, as you can do a wash while you’re there and they have beach towels and lots of the essentials for you to use. Check with the owners what they have, so you’re not carrying more than you need. You’ll need swimming things, some shorts, dresses, or cover-ups for the beach, a few pairs of comfortable shoes and some things for the evening. The key is loose fitting, comfortable clothes, not forgetting that the evenings can feel chilly after a very hot day, so bring a cardie, or a pashmina to make sure you’re prepared. We also recommend 100% UV sunglasses and a hat to protect your eyes and head from the sun.
  3. Plan Ahead – Enjoy researching what you’re going to do during your trip and as well as getting excited, you can also save money by buying tickets online in advance for attractions and waterparks. Look to see if there are any special events during your stay such as ferias or concerts, so you don’t miss out! There are lots of great websites which can help you plan from home, including the newly launched Things2DoMarbella which features the latest technology to help you enjoy your holiday.
  4. Look after your skin – The sun can be quite punishing on your skin, so before you go, make sure you exfoliate and moisturise so your skin is in great condition. When you arrive, start with a high factor sun cream, gradually working down to a lower factor, but never underestimating the power of the Spanish sun – red is so not a good look!
  5. Get ready for the beach – Here is Spain we are in the middle of operation bikini – fitness and healthy eating to get beach ready. If you want to feel more comfortable on the beach, give yourself plenty of time to start a healthy eating and exercise routine. Also, remember that your feet will be out of boots and into sandals so give yourself a pedicure so they are hot to trot.

To find out more about things to do and places to go, download our free Costa del Sol Holiday Guide, it’s the perfect tool to help you enjoy your next holiday to the full.

If you haven’t booked your holiday yet, what are you waiting for? The earlier you book the more options you’ll get for flights and accommodation. We’re expecting another record summer here on the Costa del Sol and the best holiday rental properties are going fast! But don’t worry we still have lots of great apartments, penthouses and villas with pools in the most popular locations. We have central options, peaceful locations and also stunning properties close to the beach – all perfect for a summer holiday to remember.

A Guide to Holidaying Around Malaga

Holidaying Around Malaga

January is a popular time to plan your holidays and if you’re wondering where to jet off to this year, we’d recommend the coastal towns around Malaga on Spain’s sunny Costa del Sol.

As well as being beautiful beachside resorts, the towns of Torremolinos, Benalmadena and Fuengirola have plenty of good value holiday rental properties, lots to do and excellent access into Malaga city and to the airport. They are connected by a good train line, unlike everywhere else on the Costa del Sol, so you don’t need to have a car. This saves you money and stress and gives you much more flexibility for exploring.

Torremolinos is closest to the airport and has plenty to offer, with wide sandy beaches, brilliant nightlife, shopping and lots to do. There’s a new tourist office in the centre of town which can help you make the most of this great area and is open Monday to Friday 9-2.30.

Benalmadena is next down the coast and within easy reach of Torremolinos and the airport. This lovely town has something for everyone, a beautiful marina, amazing nightlife, lots of family friendly activities and of course some lovely beaches.

If both these places sound good to you, then we’d recommend this 3 bedroom apartment between Torremolinos and Benalmadena and within walking distance of supermarkets, bars, restaurants and shops. The apartment is arranged over one floor, with a south-east facing terrace, a comfortable living and dining area and three good sized bedrooms, one with bunk beds, and there’s a shared pool and gardens.

A little further along the coast towards Marbella is Fuengirola, the final town on the train from Malaga and the airport. Fuengirola has wonderful beaches, great restaurants, a large international community and plenty of things to do, including an excellent zoo and water park. It is great for families, couples and groups and there are lots of good value holiday rental properties to choose from.

This cosy 2 bedroom holiday apartment is located in Carvajal, between Benalmadena and Fuengirola. Carvajal has a train station, so you can easily pop to Fuengirola and Benalmadena and up to Malaga too. Or if you fancy some exercise, you can walk along the promenade to either Benalmadena or Fuengirola, or all the way to Torremolinos if you really want to stretch your legs. The apartment has amazing sea views and is just 5 minutes’ walk down to the beach. It is well maintained, has a stunning south facing terrace and roof terrace, a spacious lounge and dining area, a modern kitchen and two bedrooms.

Choosing a location close to Malaga, gives you easy access to the airport and the beautiful city of Malaga, with its gorgeous port, historic centre, amazing shopping and art galleries. Each town has its own character and plenty to offer, if you’re not sure which one to choose please contact us and we can discuss the perfect area and Costa del Sol holiday rental for you.

Things to do with kids on the Costa del Sol in the winter

Things to do with kids on the Costa del Sol in the winter

We are very lucky here on the Costa del Sol and usually have bright sunny days, even in the winter, however it’s not always beach weather, so for those of you planning an off-peak break with kids, we’ve put together a list of recommendations for you.

Visit the zoo – We love the zoo in Fuengirola on a sunny winter’s day, as it’s quieter and all the walking around is much easier when it’s not too hot. Selwo Aventura near to Estepona is amazing as well, it’s a huge zoo with animals including lions, hippos, giraffes and zebras. You can pay extra to go on their safari tour, get up close to the animals, learn about them from the zoo keeper and even feed the zebras which is a great experience. If you’re staying around Sotogrande, then Castellar Zoo is a great choice too, where you can pet and feed many of the animals!

Take a Hike – The countryside just inland of the Costa del Sol is spectacular and perfect for exploring in autumn and winter. We’d recommend the foothills of La Concha near Marbella for a lovely stroll and a place to collect pine cones to burn on your log fire, or the hills behind Mijas Pueblo have some lovely trails to follow.

Make chocolate – Mijas Pueblo also has Mayan Monkey the world’s smallest chocolate factory, where you can do fun workshops to make your own chocolate!

Visit a play centre – There are several great play centres, including the newly opened Mundo Mania in Cancelada (between Marbella and Estepona), which is the biggest in the area, and has zones for babies and toddlers, 3-12 year olds and even a teen zone, so it’s one for all the family! There’s also Kidz Kingdom in Cancelada, Fantasy Land in La Cala and BosquiPark in Sabinillas.

Have a bite to eat – Almost all restaurants on the Costa del Sol welcome kids with open arms, but if it’s a nice day, then eating in one of the chiringuitos (beach restaurants) right on the sand is a great choice. If you want something with more for the kids to do, Funky Forest between Marbella and Estepona is a lovely café with a lawn, swings and a slide, a play house and even rabbits to feed and the food is great.

Head to the playground – Everywhere you go on the Costa del Sol you will find playgrounds and they are great fun at any time of year!

For more great tips on off-peak holidays on the Costa del Sol read last month’s blog post, where we shared some advice on choosing your location, accommodation and holiday type, to make the most of this very affordable time to get away. We have a selection of great holiday rentals on the Costa del Sol, which are the ideal home from home for a family holiday. Many are equipped with kids’ toys, cutlery and plates and high chairs, so you can travel a little lighter, and they are a great place to relax and enjoy a holiday with the little ones. Hope to see you here soon!

Holiday Advice for August on the Costa del Sol

Are you coming to the Costa del Sol this August? You are in good company, with a whole raft of celebrities spotted here last month, including Novak Djokovic, Seal, Tom Jones, Eva Longoria, Antonio Banderas, not to mention footballers and stars of the small screen. It’s a wonderful place to take a holiday, with so much to do, great beaches, shopping, restaurants and events and August is definitely the most popular month to travel.

Here are some tips from Costa del Sol holiday rental experts HolidayRentalontheWeb to make your holiday even better –

Take care in the sun – Weather forecasts are predicting temperatures in the late 20s and early 30s throughout August, with next Friday reaching a sweltering 36°C. The wonderful weather is one of the best things about a holiday on the Costa del Sol, but it can get dangerous too if you don’t take care. Apply your sun cream regularly, starting with a high factor and working down to protect your skin, whilst getting a great tan. Make sure you’re drinking at least 2 litres of water every day, wear a hat and good quality glasses to protect your eyes and if you start feeling too hot seek shade and a cool glass of water until you feel ready to cope with the heat.

Watch out for unregulated masseuses on the beaches – The Marbella Town Hall has issued warnings against using illegally-practising masseuses on the beaches this summer, saying that they are not qualified and can also make their clients feel sick and dizzy, often pass on illnesses and infections and can cause serious injury. Many beach clubs and chiringuitos have massage areas with regulated and qualified masseuses and there are many spas where you can enjoy a relaxing massage, so there’s no need to miss out, just choose carefully.

Make sure you have your EHIC – A European Health Insurance Card entitles you to free emergency health care when you’re on holiday in Spain. The EHIC is something you should apply for at home before you leave and make sure you have it with you when you travel. It’s unlikely that anything will happen during your holiday, but having your EHIC gives you peace of mind and allows you to enjoy everything to the full. Here’s a useful article about the EHIC including a link to the application form to make it easier for you to apply.

Book Restaurants and Attractions in Advance – August is a very popular time to come and so everything is buzzing, which gives a wonderful atmosphere, but also can cause problems with finding a table in the best restaurants, or can cause lines at some of the attractions. We advise booking in advance by popping down to the restaurant the previous day, or in the morning, or giving them a call, people normally speak English and it’s nice to know that you have a place sorted out for the evening. We’d also recommend looking online for attractions such as the waterparks, you will often be able to book online and get a discount and also be able to skip the queues, so it’s well worth doing!

Trust the experts HolidayRentalontheWeb to find you the perfect Costa del Sol holiday rental property, we have a large portfolio of quality rental properties all over the coast, from luxury villas to affordable apartments. For more tips on making the most of your holiday, download our Costa del Sol Holiday Guide

If you want a last minute booking, please call us on 0034 952 83 95 95 as availability is very limited this year. Remember that September is a wonderful time to visit when the weather is still glorious, but the crowds lessen and the travel costs drop, so you haven’t missed the boat if you haven’t had your sunshine holiday this year! Have a great holiday!

Costa del Sol Tourist Attractions

bigstock-children-sliding-down-a-water--8101303It’s wonderful being able to specialise in holiday rentals on the Costa del Sol, because there’s so much to offer all kinds of holiday makers. Rental apartments and villas are most popular for families, as it’s so convenient to have a home from home where you can prepare food for the kids and let them have a nap whilst you relax. Families are spoilt for choice when it comes to things to do on the Costa del Sol, plus there are more things being created all the time.

One of the newest things to launch is a concept called Happy Days Costa del Sol on the San Pedro Boulevard which includes a year-round outdoor ice skating rink, mini golf, American food from a cool food truck and even live sports on big screens. San Pedro Boulevard is a great place to visit in the early evening with a bike, roller skates or skate board as you can go from playground to playground and stop for drinks and snacks in some lovely cafes along the way. Perfect family fun and not surprisingly our San Pedro holiday villas are gaining in popularity!

Another new attraction in the pipeline is a new water park beside Hotel Don Miguel, behind Marbella’s main bus station. According to plans it should be open for summer 2017 and will offer 62,000sqm of water fun including 8 zones and 28 attractions. This will be a great new addition for the Costa del Sol to reduce travel to the existing parks and lessen crowds. But if you don’t want to wait for 2017, here are three great options which are open until the end of this month and then reopen end of May or beginning of June 2016.

Aqualand in Torremolinos is the largest waterpark in the Malaga province, featuring Europe’s highest water slide, 19 water slides for adults and 15 suitable for children. Torremolinos is the original tourist resort on the Costa del Sol, very convenient as it’s located so near to the airport and the city of Malaga, with lots to see and do. Read our Torremolinos Area Guide

Parque Acuático Mijas, FuengirolaThere are five water slides, a lovely little kids’ area with loads of small slides for the under 7s, mini-golf, rock-climbing wall, Jacuzzis, picnic areas and gardens and they often arrange fun activities for adults such as aqua aerobics. There are discounts for booking online and also for going after 2.30. Fuengirola is an excellent choice for a family holiday, at the end of the train line from Malaga and the airport, with loads to do including a zoo, parks and playgrounds, wide sandy beaches, excellent shopping and lots of restaurants and we have many holiday rentals in Fuengirola to choose from.

Bahia Park, Algeciras (near Gibraltar) was named the best water park in Andalucia by travellers on TripAdvisor and you can see why, with 8 rides, activity pool, children’s area and the largest Jacuzzi in Andalucia. There’s also kids entertainment in the afternoons and you can either enjoy a picnic or try one of the restaurants. This closes earlier in September than the other 2 so you may have to wait until next June to try it out. Algeciras is quite an industrial town and not one we’d recommend for a base for a holiday, but if you’d like to be near there and Gibraltar, then Sotogrande is a good choice, especially if you like water sports and golf and large villas.  Check out our Sotogrande Area Guide to find out more

We have holiday rental properties throughout the Costa del Sol, so please just ask if you want to be in a specific area, or you’re not sure where to stay, or browse our holiday rentals by location with our easy to use browse and book interactive map.

Make a splash this summer – Holiday Villas with Private Pools

Family Outside Relaxing In Swimming PoolOne of the most enjoyable things about a family holiday on the Costa del Sol is hanging out by the pool, soaking up the sun, with kids swimming and playing together and being able to pop inside for an ice cream, delicious lunch, snack or a cold glass of wine. This is a real luxury, but also so convenient, especially for families with young kids that still need a nap during the day. Plus, because you can have a great time at the villa, you can really relax and can actually end up saving money as you’re eating at home.

We have a great selection of villas with private pools available for holiday rental on the Costa del Sol this summer. The location of Benalmadena is a great choice for families as there’s loads to do in Benalmadena itself, plus it’s close to the airport and connected by train to Malaga and Fuengirola so you can do without a car.
