Three reasons to spend Christmas on the Costa del Sol

You don’t have to fly long haul to experience a magical and sunny Christmas this year. The Costa del Sol makes an ideal place for a Christmas or New Year getaway for families, couples or groups of friends looking to do something a bit different over the festive period.

Many people only think of the Costa del Sol as a summer destination, but it’s great all year round and Christmas is extra special. Here are three reasons we think you’ll love to spend Christmas on the Costa del Sol.

To make it even more attractive for you, we’re offering a 10% discount on all our properties for Christmas and New Year bookings from the 15th of December to the 15th of January. To claim your discount, browse our Costa del Sol holiday rentals online, choose your favourite and email  matthew@holidayrentalontheweb.com with your accommodation choice and your dates.

Here’s why we love Christmas on the Costa del Sol and think you will too –

  1. The festive magic and events

The Christmas lights have been turned on across the Costa del Sol and all the towns and villages are looking fantastic. As well as the lights, you’ll find the traditional nativity scenes or “belen” gracing squares, churches and even the airport. These are incredible depictions of the Christmas story, which add a traditional Spanish touch to the season. Many towns on the Costa del Sol have routes around the different nativity scenes, which can be a very festive way to explore a new place, just ask at the closest tourist office to your holiday rental.

If you’re travelling with the family, you’ll be pleased to know that there are lots of special activities for the children. You can visit one of the grottos in town centres and in the main shopping centres on the Costa del Sol.  The Town Halls organize lots of excellent family friendly activities such as musical performances, outdoor ice rinks and kids’ parties. For example, in Marbella there is a children’s party on the 14th of December, an outdoor ice rink from the 21st to the 26th of December, Christmas themed activities including a Christmas train from the 28th of December to the 6th of January and a New Year’s Eve Christmas party for kids at midday. Check the programme of activities in your local tourist office for times and places when you arrive, but be assured there’s lots going on.

Restaurants and bars put on special Christmas events with live music in the run up to Christmas. There are special Christmas Eve events and meals and of course there are lots of brilliant options for the day itself if you don’t fancy cooking. You will still be able to find a traditional British Christmas dinner if you want to go the traditional route, or you can try something international, there are options to suit all palates. Check out this list of Christmas events to inspire and excite you.

There are lots of great things to do for New Year’s Eve as well. Take the traditional Spanish option and head to the main Town Square for midnight, to enjoy the fireworks and entertainment late into the night. Not much happens before midnight, so find a cosy bar or restaurant near the square to enjoy some tapas and few drinks a little earlier. You can pick up party packs from Spanish supermarkets with the traditional 12 grapes, party poppers etc to do it like the locals. Alternatively, there are loads of New Year’s Eve parties and events, from super swanky gala dinners, to more informal meals and drinks which last late into the night. You’re sure to find an option that’s right for you. Ask us for recommendations near to your holiday rental.

  1. The great weather and outdoor activities you can enjoy

When it’s dark and cold at home it stays warm and bright here on the Costa del Sol. Average temperatures for December are 12⁰C, with highs of around 16⁰C most days. While it’s not bikini weather, it is perfect for an active holiday. Get out onto the golf course, hike in the hills, stroll along the seafront promenade or simply enjoy dining al fresco – in December it’s a real treat.

This is a great time of year to enjoy the stunning countryside inland from the Costa del Sol as well. Explore the beautiful white villages or walk the Caminito del Rey, as well as seeing the incredible Christmas light shows in Malaga. There are so many options under sunny skies. You could even take a day trip to the mountains and ski!

  1. You can enjoy Christmas for longer

Another reason to love Christmas in Spain? It keeps going!

If you’re one of those people that never wants Christmas to end, Spain is for you – you get a whole extra week and a fabulous traditional Spanish experience.

After the New Year’s Eve celebrations comes Three Kings, the time when Spanish children receive their Christmas presents. The Three Kings visit kids on the night of the 5th of January and all the towns and villages along the Costa del Sol hold a special parade to welcome them. These parades feature marching bands, floats with kids’ favourite characters, sweets being thrown into the crowds and the three kings themselves waving and throwing sweets to the children. In Marbella, the Kings even arrive by speed boat into Marbella port, for an extra touch of Marbella glamour!

If this sounds like heaven, get your booking in and enjoy 10% off your holiday rental property between the 15th of December and the 15th of January. Browse online for your ideal property, or send your requirements and dates over to matthew@holidayrentalontheweb.com and he will send you a list of suitable properties and apply your special Christmas booking discount.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Plan your festive getaway

Plan your festive getaway

November is here and the countdown is well and truly on to the festive season. Where will you be spending the holidays this year? If you’re getting family together from around the country, why not bring them all over to Spain’s sunshine coast to celebrate?

The Costa del Sol has great weather all year round with temperatures rarely dropping below 10°C and regularly hitting highs of 16°C, you can still enjoy 6 hours of sunshine each day. As it only rains an average of 5 days in December, you should have lots of bright sunny days, but with cool evenings which make you feel festive.

Bringing the whole family, or a group of friends, together in a villa on the Costa del Sol is a great way to add excitement and novelty to the holidays. It also takes away from any one person having to shoulder all the responsibility for cooking or cleaning for example. By celebrating on neutral territory any jobs can be shared around and there’s no unnecessary stress on you.

There are spectacular villas on the Costa del Sol available for Christmas rentals at a fraction of the cost of the summer and we can arrange cleaning as well, so you can just relax. You won’t believe how far your budget will go when you split a large villa between a group and they offer so much space and facilities too.

Take this beautiful luxury 6 bed villa in Elviria for example. It would be just 61€ per person per night based on 12 people sharing in December. For that you have so many lovely features such as a gym, private pool, formal living room with a grand piano, perfect for singing carols, a comfortable den where you can cozy up and watch your favourite winter movies. You can take advantage of the sunny days in the spacious garden and enjoy a BBQ and drinks in the covered Cabana and bar area. There is a huge, fully equipped kitchen if you want to cook a big festive meal, or you can head down to one of the nearby restaurants for a traditional dinner, or something a bit different. A winter break here would be unforgettable!

Top Tips for choosing a holiday rental property for Christmas

Christmas Rental PropertyIt’s Christmas time and amongst all the mistletoe and wine, we’re also enjoying some great winter weather here on the Costa del Sol and it’s not too late to escape the dark, cold and crazy crowds of Christmas shoppers and disconnect from it all for a special Spanish Christmas.

Check out our last post for the low down on Christmas on the Costa del Sol and visit Marbella Family Fun and My Destination Marbella for news on Christmas events and parties to enjoy.

If you’re now feeling inspired and want a last minute trip, there are loads of great holiday rental properties to choose for a Christmas getaway on the Costa del Sol. To help you choose the right one for a winter break, we’ve put together a few tips and things to look out for which will make sure you have the best time –

  1. Make sure you choose a location which is busy all year round or close to a vibrant town – During winter it can be very quiet on a holiday development or in a small residential area which has really been designed for summer time and you can feel a bit isolated. You’re better off choosing somewhere within one of the busier towns such as; Estepona, Marbella, Fuengirola, Benalmadena and Torremolinos which are busy and have lots to offer all year round.
  2. Select a property with heating or an open fire as Spanish homes can be chilly in the winter.
  3. Think about whether you want to hire a car or not – This will influence where you decide to stay, as if you don’t want to drive we’d suggest being on the train line from Malaga, or being in an urban area where you can walk around and there’s enough to keep you busy. For the maximum flexibility and to make the most of everything that’s going on we would definitely recommend hiring a car.
  4. Make sure your property has an oven – This sounds strange, but many Spanish homes don’t have an oven in the kitchen and if you want to cook a traditional Christmas dinner then this is obviously a big problem, so don’t leave it to chance, make sure that you ask.
  5. Prepare for all weathers – Christmas on the Costa del Sol is usually dry and warm, but of course it is the winter and so it can rain and it is chilly in the evenings. So pack clothes which are easy to layer, check whether the property has DVDs or board games and bring along your family favourite games so that if you do have a rainy day you can enjoy being in your holiday rental property. Even if it’s wet you can visit the amazing museums in Malaga, shop ‘til you drop at shopping centre La Cañada, go and see a movie (look for VO – which means it’s in the original language) or take the kids to one of the many indoor play centres. You know the sun will be out again soon!

We are Costa del Sol holiday rental experts, so please don’t hesitate to ask for our shortlist of the best properties for a Christmas getaway. Just send us your requirements and your dates or give us a call and we’ll find you a cozy, well located property where you can spend an amazing alternative Christmas in Spain.

Feliz Navidad and have a wonderful Christmas wherever you choose to spend it!

The Run-Up to Christmas Begins on the Costa del Sol

Halloween is over and whilst temperatures linger in the mid 20s during the day, there’s no doubt that the build up to the festive period is beginning.

The large shopping centre La Cañada on the outskirts of Marbella has put up its Christmas tree this week and whilst the lights won’t go for a few weeks you can see the preparations are being made. The first festive event announcement was sent out last week, the annual Concordia gala where the great and the good of Marbella society and further afield gather to raise money for this local Aids charity and start the Christmas period with a glittering event on the 5th December.

You might not think of the Costa del Sol as the place for a Christmas get away, but it’s actually a great option for people who are a little jaded by the crazy commercialisation of the holiday in the UK and elsewhere. Here in Spain it’s a more low-key event, with most decorations not going up until 1st December, lovely little Christmas fairs, markets and concerts, not to mention opportunities to stroll down by the sea to walk off that Christmas lunch. There are lots of restaurants serving the traditional British Christmas dinner and if you have a holiday rental property on the Costa del Sol you can buy everything you need from supermarkets such as Iceland, or even take a day trip to Gibraltar and stock up in Morrisons and see the monkeys!

Christmas Eve is celebrated more than Christmas Day by the Spanish and the big party is the Three Kings on the 6th January when the Kings come to town in a big procession to bring the kids their presents. It’s lots of fun!

We produced a guide to Christmas on the Costa del Sol here if you’d like to learn more.

Celebrating the Three Kings in Spain

One of the great things about going on holiday to the Costa del Sol during the Christmas period is that you get to do it twice! The celebration of the arrival of the three kings who bring gifts to the newborn baby Jesus Christ is the most important day of the Christmas holidays in Spain.

The three kings are celebrated pretty much the same as Father Christmas. The children leave a little snack for the kings and camels on the night, similar to us leaving out sherry and a mince pie for Santa and they even write letters to the kings telling them the toys they wish for. Many cities even set up a special post box where children can leave their letters for the ‘royal mail man’ so your children could even join in too! If the children have been good that year they receive presents from the three kings during the night just like Father Christmas!

The Spanish commemorate the arrival of the three kings on the 5th January every year with a festive parade and gift giving, however as the children usually go back to school on the 7th it doesn’t leave them with much time to play with their new toys, so many families have also started to celebrate the 25th December to give them more time. The children usually receive half of their presents on Christmas day and the other half on three king’s day.

The arrival of the three kings on the 5th Jan brings much excitement to cities all over Spain and the big parades (la cabalgata de reyes) are major events and usually attended by the whole family. Some of the big parades are even televised. During the festive parade, the three kings are mounted onto big chariots and will throw sweets to the children who are waiting nearby holding umbrellas upside down in order to catch them! It’s a really fun event to take the kids to, you can find the route the parade will take and information on other Costa del Sol Christmas events on Marbella Family Fun and other websites.

Remember during the three kings it will be a national bank holiday on the 5th and 6th January so make sure to stock up on everything you need before then! If you would like a welcome pack with all the essentials ready and waiting for you at your holiday home on the Costa del Sol, send us your requirements or call us on 952 839 595

Costa del Sol’s low energy Christmas

This time of year our streets are beautifully lit by thousands of bulbs to celebrate Christmas and light up the winter nights. Malaga’s Christmas decorations are famous and draw crowds from all around. This year the display is as big as ever with 3.7 million Christmas bulbs, the most spectacular lights are on Calle Larios and the Paseo del Parque. However, there is a big difference with this year’s display, as they are using low energy light bulbs to save energy.

Fuengirola is also saving energy this Christmas as 100% of their 1.4 million lights are now low energy versions. Millions of poinsettias are also planted around Spain, with 100,000 planted in Malaga this year alone. Hopefully they will also have a positive environmental impact by processing the air’s CO2!

Take part in El Gordo

If you are in Spain over the Christmas period and you want to take part in the national Spanish craze then you must play the lottery.

It’s called El Gordo or the fat one due to the huge prize fund. Last year an estimated 98% of Spanish adults played and the jackpot was over 2 Billion Euros!

As a non-Spanish speaker it can be a bit daunting to play, but you shouldn’t miss out. To find out all the information you need to know and be prepared, there’s an excellent article on Spanish Fiestas all about El Gordo . There are also a few places offering online tickets, but it’s best to go into the national lottery shops which are all around the country as you know they are legitimate. The draw takes place this year on 22 December, so don’t delay if you want to get involved. Good luck!
