Fast, safe, more comfortable and more environmentally-friendly is how Spanish rail network company RENFE describe their Málaga to Madrid AVE High Speed Train link.
One thing’s for sure, with a top speed in excess of 300km/hour, and a journey time of a little over two and a half hours station-to-station, the new service now means you can travel between the two cities faster than ever before, without taking to the skies.
In fact, if you take the average time spent waiting around in airports, flight delays and transfers from the airport into Madrid or Málaga city centres into consideration, the AVE actually gets you to the heart of both cities faster than by plane.
And according to recent traveller statistics, people have been taking full advantage of that fact, with over two million passengers using the service since the line opened a little over a year ago, a figure that’s set to rise over the coming year.
It’s been a real shot in the arm both for tourism here on the Costa del Sol, and for foreign residents and holidaymakers alike on the Coast who can now take a daytrip right to the centre of the Spanish capital and back with little advanced planning – a trip which previously involved a 12 hour round trip by road, or the greater expense of air travel.
And booking tickets couldn’t be easier, either via the English language section of the RENFE website , by phone on 902 24 02 02 or direct from the ticket office at Málaga station.
Ticket prices vary according to the style (Tourist, First or Club), time of day and season in which you wish to travel.
Discounts are available for advanced bookings, and for Internet bookings, but it’s advisable to check with RENFE first, as the discounts on offer change regularly.
