The 2009 Volvo World MatchPlay Golf Championship is coming to Estepona on the Costa del Sol between October 29th and November 1st this year. This is fantastic news for the local Costa del Sol community and especially for our holiday rental property owners with conveniently-located properties, as demand for accommodation during the tournament is expected to be high…

Considered one of the most prestigious competitions on the professional golfing calendar, the tournament will take place at Finca Cortesin Golf Course near Estepona.

This year’s revamped format will pit 16 of the top golfers from every continent – including such illustrious names as Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Michael Campbell and Phil Mickelson – against each other to win prize money of over three million Euros.

The fact that such a prestigious golfing event has moved to the Costa del Sol from its traditional home of Wentworth in England speaks volumes for the Coast as a golfing destination. But then, the Coast is a true golfers’ paradise, catering for players of all standards, with around 50 quality courses ranging from simple 9-hole courses to Europe’s most challenging; the legendary Valderrama and new Finca Courtesin.

With great weather almost guaranteed throughout the golf season, not to mention a whole host of other amenities and entertainment on offer – such as the fabulous beaches, great sports and beach clubs, adventurous things to do, and interesting places to visit, world-class shopping, an abundance of restaurants and the exciting night life.

Many believe that the fact the World MatchPlay Championships has found its new home on the Coast can only further enhance the Coast’s reputation as the ideal place to choose for a relaxing golfing break.

This is great news for the local community and especially for our holiday rental property owners with conveniently-located properties, as demand for accommodation during the tournament is expected to be high.

To capitalise on this, we’ve embarked on a major e-marketing campaign targeting our direct travel clients, European travel industry partners and UK golf clubs to launch our new ‘Fairway Collection’ of over 30 quality-assured self-catering golf holiday rental apartments and villas located on or within a 5 minute walk of a Costa golf course, many of which are within short walking distance of the Championships.

Discounts to encourage early rental bookings during the tournament mean some of our rental accommodation is now available from just €13.50 per person, per night during the tournament, for group bookings.

What’s more, we’ve teamed up with local golf booking specialists, Golf Service, to offer holiday rental clients substantial green fee discounts at every single course on the Coast, as well as pre-booked tee times via our website.

All positive news in these harsh times!

All for now, hasta luego!

Promoting our portfolio of holiday rental properties to generate much-needed rental income for our homeowners is a tough challenge at the best of times. It’s even more challenging these days with the worldwide economic slowdown and an over-supply of available rental properties resulting in the self-catering holiday accommodation market on the Costa del Sol being more competitive than ever before.

So say hello to Kathryn Stride, the person charged with the task in our Holiday Rentals department.

Kathryn, our Holiday Rentals Executive
Kathryn, our Holiday Rentals Executive

Although she’d never admit it herself, Kathryn is what you call a true professional, with a wealth of experience in the UK travel industry.

She’s increased our rentals business significantly year on year, and with the number of weeks of holiday rental bookings generated so far this year already well up over the same time last year.

So what, you may ask, does Kathryn do each day to be such a success?

Well, her  day starts early in the office at her computer as she goes through her emails and checks the bookings that have been generated overnight through our HolidayRentalontheWeb.com website’s automated booking system.

“We get a lot of enquiries from holidaymakers,” says Kathryn. “Usually they’ve been browsing through our online portfolio in the evening, seen a property or two they like and want more information, especially about the dates the properties are available.”

Although each property has a live online calendar that instantly shows availability, kathryn is happy to deal with rental clients direct. She says that even though people can easily book and pay for their accommodation online, without the need to call or email her first, holidaymakers still like to make contact to quickly confirm with her all the details that are shown on the website.

“Giving rental enquirers a quick call or sending out an email means I can establish personal contact with them. It helps to reassure people that we’re not just another faceless website sending out automated responses and that we actually take a hands-on approach to find exactly the kind of accommodation they’re looking for.”

Kathryn also receives a great deal of enquiries from our partners in the European travel industry.

“We’ve been providing rental accommodation to travel companies in the UK and Ireland for many years now, and more recently to travel companies in Scandinavian countries like Sweden and Denmark. So I’m in regular touch with the sales staff in those companies, pro-actively recommending our properties and advising them about any special price deals we may have, so they can in turn recommend them to their clients.”

Another key aspect of Kathryn’s job is speaking regularly with our rental property owners and negotiating special price discounts to be promoted to holidaymakers and travel partners.

“Obviously, things are tough financially for a lot of people thinking about their holidays at the moment, but from what we’re seeing in terms of the volume of bookings we’re getting, they apparently still want their two weeks in the sun. It’s the one luxury they seemingly don’t want to do without. Having said that, people are shopping around a lot more looking for the best deals, and there are some great deals available, so it’s important for us and our owners that we stay competitive by offering special discounts.”

Kathryn insists that on the whole, owners fully understand this. “I’ve had the owners of some of our most luxurious rental villas recently contacting me asking if we can drop their usual rental price by as much as 30% to help get bookings. Whilst special deals like these represent compelling offers to holidaymakers and travel partners, our 10% early booking discounts also work very well in generating bookings.”

Kathryn’s daily routine is far from desk-bound. Quite often she jumps in the company car to head out and about, up and down the Coast visiting the new properties that have been added to our holiday rental portfolio. “This helps me establish a realistic weekly rental price for the property just after we’ve taken it on, based on a combination of the type and quality of the property and its desirability in terms of location. It also helps me get to know each property inside out so I can offer first-hand advice about it to our rental clients.”

She also manages all the ‘Meet and Greets’, to ensure holiday guests are personally welcomed upon arrival by a member of the HomeCareontheWeb staff, sometimes quite late into the evening and on weekends, to ensure they’re familiar with their rented property and the local area. “Guests like to know the important things about their accommodation such as where the nearest bar is and how the air conditioning works!”

A lot of holiday clients also pop into the office during their stay to ask her advice about things to do and places to go, or to use the office facilities like the Internet. “We leave a Guest Manual in all the properties with all the information about the Coast in it, but people still like to hear it ‘from the horses mouth’ so to speak, and I’m delighted to point them in the right direction. It’s all part of the service.”

If you’d like to speak to Kathryn about any of the issues raised in this article, please call her on either (Spain)+34 952 83 95 95 or (UK) 0208 123 58 53 or send her an email to info@HolidayRentalontheWeb.com

Málaga-Madrid high speed train has been a ‘shot in the arm’ for Costa del Sol

Fast, safe, more comfortable and more environmentally-friendly is how Spanish rail network company RENFE describe their Málaga to Madrid AVE High Speed Train link.

One thing’s for sure, with a top speed in excess of 300km/hour, and a journey time of a little over two and a half hours station-to-station, the new service now means you can travel between the two cities faster than ever before, without taking to the skies.

In fact,  if you take the average time spent waiting around in airports, flight delays and transfers from the airport into Madrid or Málaga city centres into consideration, the AVE actually gets you to the heart of both cities faster than by plane.

And according to recent traveller statistics, people have been taking full advantage of that fact, with over two million passengers using the service since the line opened a little over a year ago, a figure that’s set to rise over the coming year.

It’s been a real shot in the arm both for tourism here on the Costa del Sol, and for foreign residents and holidaymakers alike on the Coast who can now take a daytrip right to the centre of the Spanish capital and back with little advanced planning – a trip which previously involved a 12 hour round trip by road, or the greater expense of air travel.

And booking tickets couldn’t be easier, either via the English language section of the RENFE website , by phone on 902 24 02 02 or direct from the ticket office at Málaga station.

Ticket prices vary according to the style (Tourist, First or Club), time of day and season in which you wish to travel.

Discounts are available for advanced bookings, and for Internet bookings, but it’s advisable to check with RENFE first, as the discounts on offer change regularly.

Hasta mañana!

Málaga, just one of Andalucia’s unique cultural treasures

The Spanish Tourist Board recently claimed that although a large proportion of foreign visitors still come to southern Spain mainly because of the climate, over a quarter now say they visit the area to experience its culture as well as its beaches.

With cities such as Cordoba, Seville, Cádiz and Granada boasting some of the most breathtaking sights to be seen anywhere in the world, it’s no surprise.

There’s the narrow, bustling cobbled streets and ancient architecture of the Jewish Quarter in Seville; the harmonious blend of two thousand years of Christian and Muslim religious history in the stunning Mezquita in Cordoba; the Alhambra set against the snow covered peaks of Sierra Nevada in Granada; the golden dome of Cádiz cathedral shimmering high over the white tipped waves of the blue Atlantic ocean, and the Gibralfaro Castle standing proud against the city skyline in Málaga – they’re all absolute must-sees on any holiday.

And thanks to recent road improvements, each of these cities are now just two or three hours away by car from the Costa del Sol, and as such, culturally rewarding day trips to each can be fitted easily in to any Costa del Sol holiday itinerary.

Málaga, located on the Coast itself is the most accessible. It’s a modern, bustling and cosmopolitan city, with a wealth of cultural history stretching back over three thousand years.

For a start there are monuments such as the Cathedral, Gibralfaro Castle, the Alcazaba and the Roman Theatre (which was only discovered 58 years ago), plus a selection of beautiful historical gardens, one of which dates back as far as 1669, and over 20 different museums to choose from.

But for a city that’s campaigning to become Europe’s Capital of Culture in 2016, many Malagueños (people from Malaga) would argue it’s the city’s artistic heritage that is its biggest claim to cultural fame.

Málaga was Picasso’s birthplace, and has dedicated not one, but two museums to its most famous son – The Pablo Ruiz Picasso Foundation Museum and The Picasso Museum – which are within a short walking distance of each other.

The Pablo Ruiz Picasso Foundation Museum features original works by the artist, both from its own permanent collection and those on temporary loan. The museum is actually located on the first floor of the house he was born in and spent the first few years of his life, with different rooms dedicated to the different areas his work covered, from paintings and ceramics, to etchings and illustrated books.

The Picasso Museum meanwhile, is located in Buenavista Palace, a 17th century Renaissance building (which is of cultural interest itself) and owes its existence to the artist’s own desire to see his work exhibited in the city of his birth.

There are over 200 examples of works by Picasso on permanent display, including oil paintings, sculptures, drawings, sketches, etchings and ceramics.

Any visit to Málaga would not be complete without a visit to either one or both of these museums. So if you get the chance, go for it!

Welcome to the HolidayRentalontheWeb Team Blog

Here it is folks, the very first post on our brand new company blog.

Whether you’re a holidaymaker looking to book yourself a fabulous place to rent for your holiday on the Coast, or a property owner wanting to rent your property out, we hope this blog will be your primary source of balanced information and views concerning everything related to self-catering holiday rental and long term letting accommodation on Spain’s Costa del Sol.

We’re certainly launching the blog at an interesting time for the self-catering holiday rentals and long term lettings business on the Coast. Hotels are moaning about their lack of bookings, but the increase in our holiday rentals business this year compared to last year tells us clearly that, despite the recession, people are still craving their fix of Costa sunshine.

And rightly so!

The Costa del Sol has so much going for it. This is a wonderful place to spend a relaxing few days, or a longer holiday break. The quality and variety of rental accommodation available here is greater than ever before, and often far more appealing. What’s more, it’s certainly more cost effective than staying in a hotel. And the amenities are amongst the best anywhere in the world.

Anyway, we shall be posting a veritable wealth of information a few times each week from now, so do check in regularly.

Hasta la proxima (until next time!).
