Summer events on the Costa del Sol

Summer events on the Costa del Sol

There have been some exciting events announced over the last few months, so we wanted to share the highlights with you to make sure you don’t miss a thing on your next holiday.

Marbella Feria 5-11th June

Many Costa del Sol residents feel that the summer season really begins with this week-long festival in Marbella. Expect parades, music, dancing, great food, concerts and plenty of fun. It begins with an amazing firework display on the beach Playa Faro at 11pm on the 5th which is definitely one to watch. The day feria will be held in the Parque Alameda and Avenida del Mar right in the centre of town and then the night feria will go up to the fairground area by La Cañada shopping centre.

James Rhodes Concert 29th June Fuengirola

One of the best classical musicians around at the moment, James Rhodes will be playing at the Fuengirola castle at the end of June as part of his Fire on all Sides tour. This is one of the many great concerts and music events taking place at Sohail Castle over the summer, so if you’re staying in Fuengirola, make sure you check out the events programme.

Ojeando Festival 13 & 14th July Ojen

For something completely different, head up to the normally quiet white village of Ojen for this two-day independent music festival. Showcasing excellent Spanish pop and rock bands and new talent right in the centre of the village, across three stages, this is a lot of fun and great value, with a 2 day pass costing just 25€. It’s within easy access of Marbella and you can even camp up there if you want the full festival experience.

Pet Shop Boys 18th July Marbella

The Pet Shop Boys are performing in Marbella as part of the amazing Starlite line up. They are well known for their impressive stage shows, combining music, art and spectacle and this should be amazing in the old quarry in the hills of Marbella. The following day, sees an intriguing combination take to the stage – Sting and Shaggy! We can’t quite imagine how these two will perform together, but the mix will be fascinating to see.

Jamiroquai 22nd July Marbella

Also at Starlite, we’re looking forward to see the legendary Jay Kay bringing his future funk style to the auditorium in Marbella.

James Blunt 3rd August Marbella

Our final pick from the great concerts at Starlite this year is the singer songwriter James Blunt who is coming to Marbella as part of his “Afterlove Tour”.

Carlos Santana concert 9th August Fuengirola

This amazing musician is bringing his signature fusion style to the beautiful setting of Fuengirola’s Sohail Castle on the 9th of August.

UB40 Concert 16th August Estepona

If you’re holidaying in Estepona, there are lots of great events taking place in the town and at the bullring throughout the summer. Our top pick has to be UB40 in concert, where original members Ali Campbell, Astro, and Mickey Virtue, will be performing as part of their ‘A Real labour of Love’ 40th Anniversary Tour.

Kool & the Gang Concert 19th August Marbella

This great soul and funk band are performing live at the Puente Romano Tennis Club in August. This is a really nice venue for concerts in Marbella, as wherever you sit you are close to the action and have a great view.

If you don’t happen to be visiting the Costa del Sol when these great events are taking place, don’t despair, this is just the tip of the iceberg! We recommend consulting the events calendars on Marbella Azul and My Guide Marbella to see what’s going on during your stay – you won’t be disappointed.

Costa del Sol concerts summer 2017

Costa del Sol concerts summer 2017

Spring is in the air and after a hot and sunny Easter, excitement is building about the summer season. Live music is a regular feature of summer on the Costa del Sol, with Beach Clubs, restaurants and bars all adding to the atmosphere with live performers.

In recent years, the concerts have really been growing in importance and thousands of fans flock here to see their favourite act. There have been some amazing acts announced who will be performing over the summer at Starlite and Puente Romano. Coming over to the Costa del Sol for a summer holiday and combining that with seeing your favourite artist is a great way to have an unforgettable getaway.

Here are some of the great people performing and when you can see them –

Starlite takes place in an old quarry in the Sierra Blanca area just above Marbella Town. For several years this music festival has been attracting some amazing acts and this year is no different. Here are the top international acts performing and the dates.

  • Anastacia 15th July
  • Art Garfunkel 16th July
  • Elton John, 20th July
  • Pretenders, 26th July
  • The Cranberries, 5th August
  • Andrea Bocelli, 15th August
  • Jason Derulo, 24th August

The Puente Romano concert series has been going for many years and holds intimate gigs in their tennis club, giving guests the chance to enjoy a great atmosphere and be close to all the actions and their favourite stars. Here are four great dates for the diary.

  • Foreigner, 11th June
  • Heather Small, Right Said Fred and Billy Ocean, 6th July
  • George Benson, 21st July
  • Michael Bolton, 10th August

These concerts are focussed around Marbella, so look for a quality holiday rental in this area to reduce travel and taxi fares.

To be close to all the action at Starlite, we’d recommend this stunning villa in Sierra Blanca  With four bedrooms, four bathrooms and impressive design, this property really has the wow factor. There are sensational views, lovely pool and garden, terraces, games room, gym and much more. This villa is perfect for a luxury holiday on the Costa del Sol and just a few minutes from Starlite, for maximum convenience.

Food Festivals on the Costa del Sol

Food Festivals on the Costa del SolBack in December we shared the good news that the Costa del Sol had been awarded yet more Michelin stars, recognising the area as a real foodie paradise which is perfect for a spot of Gastro tourism. Read the full article here

As fantastic food is so important to a great holiday and we’re lucky enough to have some of the best of it here in Spain, we thought we’d highlight some of the amazing food festivals that take place here during the year. Timing your visit to coincide with these great events and booking yourself into one of the Michelin starred restaurants, makes for the perfect trip for anyone who loves food and allows you to see a different side to the Costa del Sol.

Feria de Los Pueblos, Fuengirola – 28th April – 2nd May – Travel around the world through food and music with this great festival. Around 50 different countries are represented, each of them having an area where they can showcase their food, music and traditional dress. This is a unique opportunity to get to know different cultures and try authentic food from all over the world without leaving Fuengirola’s Fair Ground. If this sounds like fun, here’s a great 2 bed apartment in Fuengirola which could be your base.

Malaga Gastronomy Festival – 29th April – 5th May – At the same time as the Feria de Los Pueblos is the Malaga Gastronomy Festival, so it’s a great time to come and enjoy both festivals in one trip. This is the third edition of the festival, which had 50,000 visitors last year alone. There will be celebrity chefs, cooking demonstrations, different gastronomic areas and activities going on all over the city, including activities at the Picasso Museum and the Wine Museum to name just a few. There will be a Gastronomy School set up where important chefs will be running workshops and in the La Marina Street Food zone 14 brilliant restaurants will be offering a range of their best-selling dishes for visitors to sample. If you want to be close to both festivals, we’d recommend staying in this lovely townhouse in Benalmadena, ideally located between Fuengirola and Malaga.

Ham Festival Estepona – August – This celebration of the wonderful Spanish ham is a great opportunity to try hams from different regions. Last year there were nearly 70 different companies represented with stalls stretching over 1.5km, all along the seafront promenade in Estepona. Each evening from 8pm to 2am you can buy plates of ham for 5€ from the stalls, enjoy it with wine and beer from the beachfront bars and soak up the wonderful atmosphere on a warm summer evening. Last year 150,000 people visited the festival between 12th and 16th August and it was a wonderful event.  Organizers confirmed they would be repeating the event this year, but exact dates have not been set. To be close to this festival, and within easy reach of San Pedro and Marbella, we’d recommend this 2 bedroom apartment in Estepona, just 50 meters from the beach.

A visit to one of the local ferias is another good way of trying some traditional Spanish foods and there are ferias from April to September to enjoy. We will be keeping an eye out as more festivals are announced and we’ll share them with you here, but if you know of any we’ve missed, please comment below so we can have a complete list.

Walking Holidays on the Costa del Sol

wanderer-455338_1280Did you know that the Costa del Sol is a great place to walk? It’s a big part of the culture to “pasear” or stroll down your local seaside promenade, particularly on a Sunday before or after lunch. Estepona, Marbella and Fuengirola are great places to get involved in this lovely tradition and there are loads of great options if you love walking.

There are two great walking events taking place in Marbella in October where you can walk as a group, meet new people and have a great time. The first is the Neon Night Marbella a charity walk taking place on October 3rd, walking from the Hard Rock Café in Puerto Banus at 9pm and following an easy 3km walk, dressed in neon kits. It’s a fun, sociable, fundraising walk and suitable for all ages and abilities. Tickets to take part are 10€ and all funds raised will be donated to children’s charities.

The second walking event is Marbella 4Days Walking from 8-11 October. This is a great challenge which people travel from all over Europe to undertake. It costs just 40€ to take part in all 4 days or 12.50€ if you want to just do one or two days. The challenge is to walk routes of 20 or 30 km per day around Marbella for 4 days, a real achievement, a great way to see Marbella and also meet likeminded people and enjoy fun activities. Families and kids can also take part in two, shorter 6km routes on 10th and 11th October, which is a great way for all the family to get involved in walking.

If these events don’t fit with your schedule, then we can recommend the hiking in the countryside just inland from the coast. The picturesque village of Mijas Pueblo has wonderful hiking routes around the back of the village, which are rated by difficulty level and can be done on your own by following the signs or by joining one of the guided weekly walks which the Town Hall puts on. These walks take place each Saturday, leaving from the tourist office at 9am and taking various routes which normally last around 3 hours. Check out the walking programme here.

There are excellent walks around Istan, Ojen and Ronda to name a few, and there are several good companies offering private, guided walks and tours to ensure everything goes smoothly. There are also a few hiking groups you can join, such as the group which does weekly walks around Manilva every Sunday.

For those people who really want to push themselves there are two amazing options. One is the newly opened Caminito del Rey, a trail along a gorge which is not for the faint hearted or vertigo sufferers, but something which is a real experience. Please note you need to book a slot to do this as the numbers are strictly limited. You can find all the info and how to book the Caminito del Rey here.

But the biggest challenge has to be walking (also climbing in places) La Concha, the iconic mountain just behind Marbella. There is a hike from the Refugio de Juanar just outside Marbella which is approximately a 5 hour round trip and a distance of 11km. This is a challenging hike and not something that should be completed without adequate supplies or in bad weather. Here’s a good description of the route.

Whichever route you choose, we can provide great holiday rental properties where you can rest your weary feet and relax. We have properties very close to the hikes, or within the main towns so you can head out each day and do different routes. Marbella is probably the best base if you want to try several different routes, with Istan, Ojen and of course La Concha nearby to tackle. This stunning Marbella 3 bedroom apartment in a brilliant central location within walking distance of the beach is a great luxury option including a Jacuzzi bath to ease any aches and pains. Check out the options and let us know where you’d like to base yourselves and we can find you a great rental property.

Malaga Airport Developments

facial_recognitionMalaga airport underwent huge changes up until 2014, changing from a very basic airport where you could hardly get a coffee to one with a new striking design, great shopping, Starbucks and other good options for food, a shiny new terminal, railway station and new second runway. These changes have made travelling through the airport so much more pleasant and even in the summer months there’s spare space and capacity.

The latest development is the introduction of facial recognition software at passport control, which has removed the people checking passports and replaced them with computers. The hope is that it will speed up the checking procedure, which has always been slow and hopefully improve the customer experience for the huge numbers of people passing through the airport each year.

Costa del Sol a Gastronomic Treat

gastroSpain is well known for its food, whether it’s the famous specialities such as paella and tapas, or the extraordinary eating experiences produced in El Bulli, the country is certainly on the culinary map. However, less people travel to the Costa del Sol for a foodie feast and can sometimes be disappointed with the quality in some of the tourist traps. There is fantastic food all over the Costa del Sol, the key is to know where to look! We have produced a great guide to holidaying on the Costa del Sol which includes a large list of restaurants we know and love which you can download on our sister website. Plus local newspapers and magazines always have a current list of well-regarded restaurants to enjoy. No matter what kind of food you crave there will be something here for you, it’s just a case of looking around.

If you want to really treat yourself to fine food then there are a number of establishments recognised with coveted Michelin stars which will delight your taste buds. These are expensive restaurants of course and require prior reservation, but they are a real experience.

The best known Michelin chef is Dani Garcia who has just made the move from Calima on Marbella’s beachfront to his own restaurant at the Puente Romano Hotel. Skina in the Old Town is tiny but boasts one Michelin star and a personal experience with a sumptuous taster menu. Jose Carlos Garcia heads up restaurant JCG in Malaga Port and El Lago on Greenlife Golf in Elviria finishes the list of Malaga stars.

To celebrate the gastronomy at the area, Dani Garcia brought together 14 Michelin stars to cook in 2014 at the Puente Romano hotel. This series of gastronomic evenings  saw where Dani García (two Michelin stars) cook with guests Andoni Luis Aduritz, from Mugaritz de Rentería (two stars), Joan Roca, from Celler de Can Roca (three stars), Quique Dacosta, from the restaurant of the same name in Denia (three stars); Ángel León, from Aponiente, in Puerto de Santa María (one star) and the Malaga “all-stars”, José Carlos García (JCG Restaurant), Diego del Río (El Lago), and Jaume Puigdengolas (Skina), together with Thomas Stork, from Puente Romano.

Events like this confirm the status of the area as a gastronomic hot-spot, so come on down and check out what the area has to offer. Our experienced team can help you to choose the best restaurants in the area, or any other local knowledge so just ask for advice on holidays on the Costa del Sol!

Christmas in and around Marbella

Every year at Christmas, amazing lights go on in Marbella, the Old Town shimmers and pretty bauble lights line the main shopping street. The days still stay sunny and relatively warm, but nights get chilly, so if you are travelling here at this time of year, make sure you bring layers so you can wrap up and be cozy.

In the Alameda Park a Santa’s Grotto usually is set up for the kids by the Town Hall and is free for kids to go along and get a present from Father Christmas.

You can also see a traditional nativity scene known as a “Belen” in the same square.  There is a tour of 11 of these nativity scenes through the old town, which is a festive way to explore the pretty old part of Marbella. A map can often be found in the Christmas programme that gets released by the Town Hall. There are also 6 nativity scenes and a Santa’s Grotto in San Pedro, and the map is in the same programme.

During the Christmas period there are many Christmas markets in aid of charity and of course many religious ceremonies throughout the period. There are also many concerts in churches, events and town squares and the traditions of the many different nationalities which call the Costa del Sol home are represented.

There are a few Christmas events organised for the kids, but because the main day for them is the 6th January, when the Three Kings bring their presents, these tend to take place after Christmas day itself.

Check out Guaro’s Luna Mora Festival this month

September is a great time to visit the Costa del Sol, the weather is still warm and sunny, there’s still lots to do but the hordes of tourists have dissipated.

Under 30 minutes drive from Marbella’s bustling centre is the pretty white village of Guaro, normally a quiet small village which is focussed on olive and almond production but which for two weekends in September attracts over 50,000 visitors for their festival of Andalusian music and culture. San Pedro Park

New park in San PedroVisitors and residents of San Pedro are now lucky enough to enjoy a contemporary urban park of 90,000 square meters above the new A7 tunnel. The park includes an auditorium, music and dance school and ample space for relaxing, walking or cycling.

San Pedro is already an appealing place to visit, with a vibrant Spanish community, pretty town centre with many churches and squares and great tapas bars and restaurants. It has a lovely seaside promenade and beaches and is popular with holiday-makers as it’s close to the beautiful port and legendary nightlife of Puerto Banus and the pretty old town of Marbella. There’s a great article all about it on Andalucia Travel Guide, click here to read it.

There are ambitious plans for a new municipal sports centre and with the park, this would make San Pedro even more desirable and make up for the disruption caused by the road works.
